Shockwave Therapy

Chronic heel pain from plantar fasciitis is often very difficult to treat. Many patients have pain that not only inhibits sports and exercise, but can even interfere with walking. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) uses electro-magnetic shock waves to transmit energy to the affected area. The shockwaves reduce tendon pain and inflammation because the energy that the ESWT stimulates healing.

Shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and other tendon injuries is usually not the first course of treatment. However, if other more conservative treatments for plantar fasciitis do not work, this shockwave treatment has proven to be very successful. If you are concerned about plantar fasciitis or tendon pain in your feet and ankles, call us at 561-793-6170 today to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced West Palm Beach podiatrists and surrounding areas or click here to request an appointment.

What Is Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is used to treat plantar fasciitis and other tendon injuries by promoting healing to the damaged tissues. When other treatments for plantar fasciitis do not work, shockwave therapy has proven to be effective in healing tendon injuries and allowing patients to return to their normal, active lifestyle after just one treatment. This is a non-invasive outpatient procedure done in our offices. A local anesthetic is used to relieve pain during the procedure, which takes about 45 minutes.

How Does Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis Work?

During the procedure, your foot doctor will target the shockwaves to the affected tendon.

The electro-magnetic high-intensity sound waves trigger an accelerated healing response. It reduces inflammation and pain in the tendon. There is a short recovery period before you can return to your normal activities and the doctor will go over that with you. Most patients begin to feel pain relief soon after treatment. Full effects of the treatment can take up to three months to be realized. This is not a temporary fix: the results are permanent.

What Conditions Are Treated?

Shockwave therapy is most commonly used to treat plantar fasciitis and heel pain. However, it can also be used to treat any tendon injuries and other chronic orthopedic conditions. Continued care with your local podiatrist should be scheduled to ensure proper maintenance and prevention measures keep you out of pain and away from injury.
